NY Day 8

Today we caught the Subway (E ) to the 1 World trade Center Museum. This place is incredible and the photos, mementos and steel remnants of the towers etc really do make you realize the absolute scale and complete devastation this horrible event caused.  You can't help but think deeply about the tragedy of it all and the sacrifices made by so many trying to help others. It is really worth the time and effort to visit.
We were also very fortunate to speak to one of the volunteers and hear his story. He was  actually working in the south tower on the 83rd floor and before the second plane hit he went against the instructions to stay in the building, he descended down the stairs, adrenaline pumping and was on the 44th floor when the building shook as the second plane hit. It hit where his office was so he would have died. Once down he entered the subway underground and got quite a long distance away from the towers ,missing any falling debris, and made his way home, a fortunate decision as the building collapsed as we all know. He lost approximately 23 colleagues that day, dreadful.
The majority of the museum is underneath and around the water memorials where the footprint of the original towers is still evident.
On our way back home we stopped in at Macy's for a cup of tea and a sit down and were delighted they had all the flowers in place for the Macy's Spring Flower Show. It looked really pretty.
The squares in the photo are where the original support beams once were, they were cut off at the foundation level

1 World tower, it is an optical illusion that the top is narrower than the base, it's the same all around.

Another part of the complex, there are  quite a number of building included. The new tower isn't as high as either the North or the South Towers that were destroyed.
Another view

One of the memorials, there are two, standing approximately where the towers were, not quite as wide.

The little flag makes this feel even more poignant.
Another large part of one of the towers. The aluminium wall behind is actually the wall of the water memorial above at street level.

Tribute quilt with peoples names sewn on.

More crumpled steel......

Part of the slurry wall that holds back the water from the Hudson river.
This is part of the new complex, its actually an entrance for the subway and  exclusive shops.

Particularly sad
Part of the spire on the top of one of the towers

A destroyed fire truck

Outside with the new Trade Center building and memorial in the background
Different angle

This was the last column and people painted names etc on it

Stairs, the escape route for many people out of the building
The quilt with the Flight numbers of the planes that were hijacked

Photos from the time of the tragedy

Another view of the destroyed fire truck

Outside

People descending the stairs to escape the horror

In Macy's with the flower show in full swing!

So pretty!
Flowers everywhere!
